ml320 BAS/ESP dash light
#3
This happened to me some time ago. I believe it refers to your brake assist system and your AWD (electronic stability).
If the light comes on and stays on, there should be an electronic service/fault code that can be read off from the car using one of those electronic instruments (I forget the official name).
Mine ended up being a $70 part that sits just behind the instrument cluster that I could have easily changed myself had I known... MB charged me $200.00

Had this too
I was able to turn it off by reinitializing system. Try this - while car is running crank steering wheel all the way left and then all the way right. Thjis worked on my 02 ml320.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Been there done that! Does anyone know if the BAS/ESP is connected in some way to the brake pad sensor?

Man,
These idiots lights are a big problem! I have the (( and an 01 ML320 and both have idiot problems. The ESP/BAS light like to be on but doesn't affect the car whatsoever. I put a business card over them so I don't dee them...saved a bundle doing this and it doesn't bother me one bit.

The light means that there is a fault with either the brake assist or the stability control. Ignoring it can lead to a dangerous situation as these are both very important safety systems in your vehicle. Have it diagnosed by a dealer or indy with a STAR system and then correct the fault. Hiding the light behind a business card is a stupid thing to do when personal injuries are at stake.

I was driving down the road, and played with the cruise control knob. All of a sudden my car started slowing down in a pulsating way. I thought that it was going to die on me, but it soon came back to normal conditions. My BAS ESP light came on at that time, and stayed on untill I turned the car off, and later restarted it. 5 days later the same thing happened, but this time I had not touched the cruise control lever. Does anybody know what the problem could be?

You can do one of two things:
1. Remove the cover under the driver's side instrument panel and with the truck running, depress the brake pedal by hand and with the other hand pull the plunger out as far as it will go. Then release the pedal. Then lift the pedal up by hand and then release.
2. If the problem continues replace the brake light switch purchased from the dealer.
There has been a recall for faulty brake light switches that does not cancel cruise control and being that you are probably a new owner, M/B has sent the recall notice to the last known owner on their records. Call 1-800-FOR-MERCedes and speak with Customer Services and ask for the form to be sent to you or they might take the info over the phone. Also ask that you would like to receive the RECALL notice for the brake light switch.
