ML purchase question...

Hey all,

I'm in the market for a new car for college. I am torn between the ML55 and the ML500. I would buy the car used, as I don't want to spend more than about $45k. That would give me a choice between a 2001 ML55 or a 2002 ML500 with (reasonably) low miles (< 25,000).

Does the ML55 offer that great of a performance increase over the ML500? What about interior wise? Are there any marked differences between the two cars?

I am looking for a compromise between a fast car and an SUV, so that's why I was leaning toward the ML55. As for resale value, will the ML55 retain more value as opposed to the ML500?

I was worried about vandalism or whatever because I have to leave my car parked outside all the time; however, my school is relatively safe, and in a very small town, so I don't think that will be a problem. Plus, I have seen other kids driving cars like the 2003 Range Rover, a bunch of X5's, CLK55, and another ML55.

My friend is also going to bring his G500 next semester, and there is always competition between us, so that's another reason I was considering for going with the ML55. I know that's a dumb reason, but *sigh*. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Exclamation

If I was you, I would buy a brand new full loaded ML350 2003 sport or inspiration edition for 42k-43K out of the door bargain ! I can't stand why you spend 46k for a 2nd hand vehicle ?!!!!
Anyway, it's just my opinion.

Yeah, I was wondernig that too when I got here, then I met some of the people. They are mostly rich snobby kids that didn't get into an Ivy. I guess I fit the description, since Brown rejected me But at least I'm not a snob or stuck-up.

It was kind of funny when I saw this little girl hop out of her 2003 Range Rover, lol...

I'd Go ML55

Less of them out there than the ML500. Love the bulged hood, massive HP and extra goodies the ML55 comes with. The ML500 seems to be more of a plush ride with a big engine. The ML55 is an AMG product with performance in mind.

IMO, if you're gonna buy a "previously enjoyed" truck, like I did, who cares what year it is? My dream ride is below.

Just as another price point...

Two months ago I found for my wife a 2003 ML500 dealer demo with 4000 miles with sport package and lots of other nice options. Sticker on the car was $55k. We got it for $46k cash out the door. New car warranty and all. We would not have ordered a new one with the sport package but glad in the end we ended up with it as it really sets it apart from all the other MLs around here. It does not do anything to the suspension (tat I know of), but it does have the flender flares, ML front bumper cover with integrater projector lamps and different rear bumper cover integrated or someting. Overall a very nice look.

We were very happy with our deal and after living with the car, the power is plenty and never leaves me wanting for more. And I have a go fast addiction with my SCCA race car and 993.

Have fun and you are lucky to be able to consider such a nice vehicle in college. I thought I was spoiled in college 10 years ago with a 4 runner.

Worth the wait?

You may also base your decision on how soon you want the ML. I have never found an M-B on a dealers lot that has all of the equipment that I want on it. It takes 3-4 months to get an ML from the factory if you order a new ML500. It may be easier (relative) to find a Starmark ML55. Obvisouly the ML55 is a superior vehicle, but do you want a brand new car or a slightly used one? Since price isn't a decision maker, I'd go with an 02 ML55. Then again, I'm very satisfied with my ML500 and there's nothing like that new car smell...

'03 ML500 Sport
I went the 500 route...

I got an '03 ML500 Sport loaded. Only option I opted out of was the voice activation for the phone. The difference in HP wasn't a factor, as the 500 is a much better towing machine, acceleration is very similar, Xenon is great, etc.. The rear fender flares on both the 500 and the 55 WILL get trashed on the leading edge if you do ever get it off-road. Hope this helps.

ML500

After some consideration, I've decided to go with a brand new ML500. I figure I can pick one up for about $53k'ish. Is there some bargaining room in terms of price? What is a reasonable goal to shoot for?

Also, I was thinking about either black, white, or silver for the exterior color. What color combinations do you guys think is best?

Thanks

Realistically...

Great choice! I would try to get one with the Inspiration package. Main reason for that is the sport seats. Silver over black is nice. I'm partial to black opal, always been my favorite. I also like Orion blue, but it doesn't look quite right on an ML. You shouldn't have trouble finding a silver one (there are tons of them out there). Depending on the option packages you get, I would shoot for 1k off MSRP if ordering of 2.5k off if buying one off the lot (or inbound). Those are on the realistic side, however I've heard of people getting them for 1k over invoice. With my dealer, they'll laugh you off the lot. (But I still like the guys). Keep in mind Mercedes-Benz has a 3% holdback on TOTAL MSRP. They're making bank off these things charging sticker. My dealer made about 5k off my ML. Good luck with things! Oh, and whenever you get tired of your car, I know a great charity in need of a vehicle! j/k

The final price for ML500 is around 48k w/ full loaded Inspiration package. That is what you have to work on for out of the door price which is still at 48k. If you hit 50k out of the door then your rating on smart bargain buyer only 5 points ! Don't get trapped w/ the added sticker price. Dealer invoice is way cheaper than that !!!! Keep bargain :
