Can I drill out the old CPS?
Hi knowledge trust!
I have a 99 ML320 and I am having a really hard time removing the old Crankshaft Position Sensor. The bolt is out, but even twisting and pulling with a pair of vice grips and prying with a flat bladed screwdriver, I have had no luck getting the sensor out. I suspect the old one has swollen from rust? (It's a very rusted car!)
If I were to drill a small hole in the CPS to get it out, would it cause any damage when shavings fall into the hole?
If I cut the top off and pushed the old CPS through, where would it fall to? Would it cause damage there?
Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks
P.S. This is my first post ever, so please excuse if I am in the wrong place.

The CPS is located above the flywheel so anything dropped in there and stays in there is going to cause damage. If you are going to knock it through, I would check to see if you can get to the bottom of the bell housing via the inspection plate. Another idea would be to drill it part way and then use an "ezy-out" or screw extractor, plenty of wd-40 and see if you can pull on the extractor and twist it out.
