Synthetic for sure. The past owner of my ML owns the dealership and had all the scheduled maintenance done. The engine ended up getting damaged and had to be replaced at about 160k. It was factory maintained. The difference was the use of non-synthetic oil along with the fact that the oil needed to be changed sooner than previously thought.

Non synthetic shouldn't be used on the ML...

Conventional oil should be replaced every 5000-6000 miles. ML motor will ruin with use of non-synthetic, though.

My ML going strong at 152k miles. Not one power train issue yet. No compromises on the scheduled 100k miles maintenance/ (full transmission & differential flush) diy my oil changes every 10k miles with Mobil 1 0-40 ALWAYS. Cabin/engine air filters replaced once a year. Good maintenance pays off in the long run.

Mihir,

First you say 5-6 k miles then you say you change your oil every 10k miles. Which is it? I assume you meant non-synthetic oils like it says.

Does the factory service for 100k say to get a trans flush etc. I thought Mercedes guaranteed the drivetrain fluids for life. I just changed my transfer case fluid today and it made a huge difference.

722.6

5speed auto Mercedes has changed there story on lifetime fluid
On later model w211 and up they have a tsb for fluid and filter change at 37,000 miles. at 100K miles you are long past due.
Mb spec fluid ie valvoline maxlife,Fuchs etc. new filter and gasket www.autohausaz.com
special mb dipstick diy on www.benzworld.org w210 diy section includes info on changing all the fluid including the torque converter.

If Mercedes guaranteed the fluid for life There would be a lot of happy mb owners who had failed 722.6 transmission getting lots of money back.

Change it,work clean

Is it OK to add Gunk motor flush to these engines during the oil change?

No! I wouldn't add anything as far as an additive. It may damage the internals. Are you having trouble?

Amopower,

What part of hampton roads are you from?

It's not an additive, it contains petroleum distillates to help clean the sludge/gunk off the parts before you do an oil change. You basically add the quart in the engine, let it run 5 minutes, and then change the oil.

I'm in Suffolk, what about you?

Im at the beach.

What company makes this additive? I wouldn't worry about it and just change the oil. Another thing you could do is just change the oil more frequently before the oil change is due.

The factory says to not add any additives or so forth...

You should come to the driveway mechanics gathering on March 12th I think it is. MBCA club meeting

The company is also called Gunk. I use it on my other cars (buick and ford) with no issues, but wanted to be more careful with a MB.

You might want to change the transfer case fluid as well if you are a dedicated do it yourselfer plus change the fluid in the differentials and transmission.

Yes you can use

engine flush idled for time on directions before a complete oil change.
A qt of kerosene achieves the same results.

Hello, i have 2004 ml350 and it is new to us. the dealer said oil good, but not really sure about it. we asked what oil is used in this car and he did not really seem to know...
car now at 85000 miles...running well, no lights on to indicate cahnge needed, should we change it, and use mobile 1 0-w40 oil 8.5 quarts, what filter needed?, then wait until 100,000 miles to do more items???

Yes 0-40w... since you don't know the history of the truck Change the transfer case fluid, differential fluid and transmission fluid as well. I would check the history of the truck if you can if not just do everything anyways.

On my ML I change oil every 10k miles (I follow the FSS). My other cars that use conventional oil, I replace every 5000-6000 miles. I would not live on conventional oil in any car for more than 7500 miles.

I also own a 2009 Subaru forester that has a recommended oil change interval of 7500 miles on conventional oil. That is the highest oil change interval I have seen on conventional oil.

Pre 2002 MLs claim tranny fluid to be lifetime in the manuals, but I would recommend flushing the whole drive train (tranny, transfer case & differentials) every 100k miles just as the post 2002 ML manuals recommend.

Hope that helps, and sorry for the confusion...

Nice every 10k!

It can be bad to do a flush! In some instances...

Im just going to do a fluid drop and filter change from now on. My tranny has about 200k but my engine has about 40k...

FYI, O'Reilly has Mobil 1 on sale for $4.99 through the end of April. I picked up all 9qts of 0-40 in stock and ordered another 3 cases (18qts). They post a limit of 24qt per purchase.
