99' ML320 needs transfer case replaced
I have a noise/vibration that was initially thought to be a driver side wheel bearing but after the local dealer checked it out, they said my 149k mile 1999 ML320 transfer case was the problem and needs replacing. Does anyone know a good place to purchase a new/used one (dealer wants $4K+$687 Labor/fluid) and is there a good DIY as I am mechanically incline. Any suggestion is much appreciated. Thx.

Update:
Maybe this will confirm that it's the transfer case...the dealer also mentioned that when the car was hoisted up and running in gear, the front wheels could be stopped when hand grabbed. The tech said this was the indicator that the transfer case is bad. Comments? Is the tech correct in his assessment? Thx again for all that replied.
