Help w/ potential purchase!

My wife and I found a 2002 ML500 today that she fell in love with.

The '02 only has 2500 miles (trade-in) and has the following options: M3 (convenience), M5 (sunroof), and Bose sound system.

The car is in fantastic shape and for all accounts and purposes is brand new.

The dealer is asking ~$40,000. I was looking for opinions as to what price is reasonable for this ML, anything we need to look for, and anything the ML should have that I will have to upgrade to later.

Thanks!

Ask yourself why it was traded in ?

Might be a perfectly innocent reason - or it could be a lemon. Ask to see it's service history.
Even 02's are not without their problems as be seen from this link.

As for 40k - given the softness of the used market and especially for ML's I'd say it was over priced. I'd say something in the region 30 to 35 k max

Really, I thought it should be more since its an ML500.

If there are no issues then I think that's a pretty good price for an ML500. I paid more for a new ML350 with options except navigation.

Question Discounts on 2002's?

I have recently read that MB was discounting '02s up anywhere from $6K-$8K by the end of the year. on top of that, this car is almost 2 model years old with the redesign right around the corner.

I have to agree that it should go for somewhere between $30K-35K. However, convincing the dealer of that is a different question...

kelly blue book has the trade-in value at $36k so dealer marked it up $4k to make a profit.

Private party sale is $39k.

Don't sound to anxious or they will pull you in like a sucker.

I'd try to offer $37-38k at most and see if they bite. Never ever go with first or second pricing from dealer.

Don't you hate the BS dealers come up with: "My boss said we can do blah blah amount but we're not making very much on it or not making a dime on it because we really want to get rid of it"

We just got a new 2003 ML500 over the weekend, and we stuck with our price of $100 over invoice and wouldn't budge on the crap they offered for our jeep trade-in which came out to be $1k less than what we wanted but eventually they caved in. The wanted $1500 over invoice also, but got them down to $100? So they basically tried to sucker us into paying $2500 more!

nellee, you should have shopped for a 500 in SoCal. Last I checked they were selling for 2K under invoice. Anyway, 40K for a used 02 is a little high. Dealers always buy back of low book. I would say 37K is a fair price.

I just punched up the numbers on Carsdirect.com and DAMN it is $2k under invoice in SoCal. Up in San Francisco, it was $100 over so we just took it. We were too preoccupied with them trying to rip us off with our trade-in that we were content with $100 over.
