Constant whine coming from rear (fuel pump? fuel filter?) ml320 1998 - HELP!!!
Hi All,
First time posting and am female so please be nice and understand that I am not mechanically inclined. LOL
I own a 1998 Mercedes ML 320 170,000+ miles
(husband drives a 2001 ML320 160,000+ miles)
In the 1998 ML320 - I'm experiencing a constant whine / high pitched coming from vehicle while running... Possibly from rear...
One local mechanic told me it could be the fuel pump and/or fuel filter.
Discussions on this site suggest power steering pump when I did a search for whining noise and other keyword searches.

If the whine is coming from the left rear wheel well then it's the fuel regulator in the fuel filter. The 98 ML's had a shorter fuel filter/regulator that was upgraded with a second generation longer unit and 3 new fuel lines to accommodate the longer unit. The second generation upgraded filter/regulator had the whine problem. The second generation filter/regulator has been upgraded at least once again since then. If you want to get rid of the whine in the left rear wheel well then get the latest filter/regulator and check to make sure your ML has been upgraded to the new fuel lines.

Great info.I am experiencing the same sound after replacing the fuel filter on my 2001 ML430.As the 2001 came with the fuel line update i believe it is the result of using an after market filter.Unless it causes other problems I think I will just live with it until the next fuel filter change.
