mercedes ml 2.7 cdi fault code P 1856

I have a 2003 ml 2.7 diesel automatic which is stuck in 2nd gear. Will start ok and drive but no gear change .Also once in drive cannot put into reverse without first turning engine off.Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be and any possible solutions?
The ESP ETS and BAS are also now on

The fault code is P1856 and says something like selection lever detection has failed .Anyone know solution?

I am awaiting the guy who did diagnostic to come back as he did not seem to know what needed doing

From now on, please post replies in your first thread, rather than starting a new one every time. In this way, a coherent story will develop that is easier for future helpers and people with a similar problem to comprehend.

My mechanic feels that the problem is the car needs a new ""gear shift control unit" and is quoting nearly £ 1200 to replace. He is not a merc specialist though. Is it possible there is just a bad connection that could be rectified or some other solution!
When I have been to this guy before whatever fault code comes up he seems to recommend a new part without looking for any other way of rectifying
If anyone can give any advice would be much appreciated
I do now understand car is in limp mode

You must check to see if there is trans. fluid present when you separate the connector. If there is this is probably your problem.

Every thing you need is all in the below links. You do not need a new shifter..

It is on the right side of the transmission just above the trans. oil pan.
