Stick a pencil through the small plastic flap at the rear of the shifter, near the D. When you hit the correct spot, you should be able to move the shifter out of P. Then drive to your nearest Mercedes-Benz service centre.

Would you post the results of your visit to the dealer, please. I have the same problem, but mine is very intermittent. It would appear for a few days and then disappears by itself.

With out a code reading its hard but from them saying it wont come out of park
probably a stop lamp switch..... Some clues check your brake lamps work not all the time but if there all out its the switch.. but just watch out could be the shifter.. If there is
a hard shift when it comes out of park or the gear display is missing shifter could be your problem

BAS/ESP light can be a sign that your wheels are out of line... Is your steering wheel at 12 dead center or off slightly to left or right?? Don't trust a general tracking center either, you need a specialist all-wheel alignment on an ML... I had this issue and had all kinds of tales about it before a simple wheel check fixed the issue!! Remember it's checking that your "stable" so any deviation from straight, may trigger the warning!

There could be a number of reasons why the BAS/ESP light could come on & the shifter would lock. They might, or not be related. Scan the car for codes & post them.
