Gas Mileage check in...what are you getting?
My 2003 ML350 just turned 139K on the clock.
I am getting about 15MPG combined regularly. I was curious if this was average or if I should be getting a bit more? Car have been very well maintained, premium fuel for its entire life and full tune up at 100K.
Has anyone done any changes to improve gas mileage in your 10 year plus MLs?
I was tempted to replace the coils or injectors or MAF?
Any input?

I'm getting 18.5 - 19 mpg average in my current '05 ML 350. My former '99 ML320 averaged 19 to 19.5 all around. My driving is about 75% rural two-lanes and 25% stop & go in-town. I tend to vacillate between using mid-range (89 octane) and premium (92 octane), depending upon the climate (premium in the summer when I run the AC a lot).

Gas Mileage Check
My 2000 ML320 averaged 23.3mpg (£0.31 GBP per mile) on a 500 mile trip recently, but I was driving quite gently to see what mpg I could get out of it; on a previous trip of 450 miles, towing a caravan and driving with some hard revs, the mpg wasn't so good (12.9mpg, £0.56 GBP per mile). Short journeys with fast driving up steep hills or the odd burst at 100mph aren't too good for fuel economy either.... It's still fun to drive though! UK petrol prices are a bit high at £1.40 per litre/ £6.3 per gallon or over $9 per gallon....

It happened to me that the coolant thermostat failed and remained open, I understood it because temperature in winter never rose over 50°C, after easy replacement temperature is now regular 90°C and fuel consumption decreased

E320 Estate for wafting and M3 SMG for blasting!
I have a facelift 2002 ML270 cdi, and when I got it the thermostat was faulty, struggling to get above 75ºc, the car was showing 26mpg (usa 22mpg) but with a new thermostat fitted this is now up to 28mpg (us 25mpg).
Thermostat is the first thing to check, if it is reading under it overfuels.
I have also swapped to Michelin Latitude Tour HP tyres in 235.65.17 size instead of the more offroad style that were on there in 255.60.17 size, this has pushed it up to 30mpg (25mpg US).
This is now giving me around 470-500 miles per tankful, much better.

My 02 ML 320 with 144K miles is averaging 15-15.6 mpg as well. Why is that? It's dealer maintained and no issues. Used to get 20-21 mpg.
