Shopping for an SUV, what did you pay for ML500

I am looking for a tow-capable SUV to replace my 01 MDX (trouble-free). I understand the early ML's had some probs, but have it still on the list. Cayenne's are 10k off sticker, Touaregs are 3-4k off, RX330's 3-4k off. I saw an 03' ML500 for 5k off sticker at my dealership, and was wondering what kind of discounts people have gotten.

Thanks

As I understand.. the issues are not really contained to earlier models... which is exactly what's driving customers mad.. so don't rush into getting it...

I mean being able to use the ML to tow a trailer. I have a track car and trailer that is going to be about 4000 lbs.

Touareg

Do yourself a favor and go drive a V8 Touareg. I traded my 00 ML430 for one and have been impressed since day one. The Touareg tows my 3500 to 4000# boat significantly better than my ML did. The air suspension is self leveling and shock dampers as well as ride height are adjustable on the fly. Ride, comfort, and features are all much better on the Touareg. $51000 with all of the available options except the 19's. 18's are standard.
Only hitch option at present is the factory installed hitch which will set you back about $700.
It may seem crazy to go from a Mercedes to a VW but VW/Porsche are leading the way with luxury SUV's (opinion).
Mercedes may close the gap in 05 but VW/Porsche have set the bar pretty high.

interesting, ive heard that the vw/porsche have a couple of problems...specifically electrical issues. im not really a fan of the asthetics of either, but i am a fan of the twin turbo cayenne...it is a pretty amazing powerplant.

Good point. There have been some electrical issues with the Touaregs. Specifically the air pressure warning system. The real problem is that the Touareg is so complicated and filled with features that you cannot simply get in it and drive. You must read the manual. People have complained about the distance the remote works from for unlocking the doors. Fact is the FOB contains a transmitter that the car senses when you approach. Automatically ulocks the doors when the key is within 5 feet so you never press the button. There was an early bug in the trailer lights module located in the rear of the vehicle. This has since been fixed with a software upgrade (15 min. at dealer). When you plug your trailer lights into the vehicle the car runs a diagnostic test on your trailer lights and lets you know, on the center display, that everything is working correctly (running lights, brake, turn). I was impressed enough to buy one and let go an X5, ML was honestly never in the picture. Burned once.

Well,

thanks for all the candid info. After cruising thru here are the Benzworld forums I decided to pass on the ML and bought a V8 Touareg. The 1st year niggles with that seem to pale in comparison to the ML horror stories. So far (70 miles) so good!
