Start up problems after battery change
Hi, please help!
I recently changed the battery in my ML 320 (2000). When I turn the key the engine fires up then dies after about 5 secs. Battery is fully charged & all the electrics (radio, windows etc work).
Ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Matt

The engine actualy starts & dies in 5 sec or it cranks for 5 sec & stops?
Also hopefully you have changed the battery without the keys in.......

Yes it starts as normal then starts to chug and just stops. I tried re-synchronising the key & that made no difference.
Earlier today it started then was chugging for approx 1 min then randomly reved up then died again.
I did remove the key when changing the battery.
Thanks

Never changed a fuel filter. Wouldn't even know where it is!
However, the car ran fine on the old battery after I had charged it over night. All this has happened since I changed the battery.

It sounds like the key has lost synchronization with the DAS (Driver Authorization System). Hopefully you have a spare key which you should try. If it is a key/DAS problem your spare key should start and run your ML. The bad key will have to be replaced. Depending on your location you could be looking at $300 +++ USD for a new key.

Hi, yes sorry it took so long for an update I've been working.
Anyway, first of all thank-you to everyone who helped me with possible solutions, it was very much appreciated. I tried everything but it all failed so in the end I took it to MB.
Mass airflow sensor fault was the problem. The battery change was just a coincidence. £450( about $650/$700 I think) & it should be fixed by tues.
Once again thank u all for you're contributions, much appreciated

^^ +1 what Art said.
My experiences with Mas Airflow Sensors is that, when defective, will cause the vehicle to run rough and at reduced power but will not cause the symptoms stated in the OP.
