ML 320 2001 Bas/Esp
Hi there,
I'd bought an ML in may 2013, and I love the car.
But these "lights of death" as I call them is annoying me so much. ABS doesn't work either. No good in the winter!
I took the car to an Mercedes dealer, a kind of specialist but not sertified MB Service I think. And I got some codes from the dealer.
He says the ABS pump needs to be replaced but I'm not sure I have to...
The lights are always on,from startup to shutoff. Except somethimes when it has rained and been cold /freesing) the lights and ABS works for a couple of minutes... It could seem like bad connections somewhere and the "frozen water" make the connection better??`
I attached photos of the codes from the Mercedes guy, I had allready changed the stop switch and checked the relay in the fuse box before going to him, but one of the codes are the stop switch, can I be so dumb and install it incorrectly?
Any ideas? Would surely appreciate some tips
Sorry if my English isn't as good as it should be.

Check relay #25.
You have C1401. This code means your ABS motor brushes are worn/finished. The brushes you need are L5-5H in the PDF. You need 2 of them. Get 4 just in case. This is a DIY. It will cost you a few hours and +- US$20-00 only. The dealer wants you to spend thousands of dollars on a new ABS pump....
This must be your main problem. After changing the brushes clear all the codes. You have recently bought the car so some codes could be old stored codes.
Good luck

Let me give you a break down for the brushes. If there is a company that does custom brushes then they can cut it for you in 30min. I had my brushes cut........
ABS pump brushes:
5mm*5mm*13mm
38mm lead(copper braid)
Material :Copper M ( Metal graphite)
Very high current
Low voltage
Low resistance 12v & 24v
Speed medium

Thanks alot art-arev
I have checked relay 25 alot of times. No problem there..
I have been into the brush idea, but this was only a guess, nice with tips from someone who have done it themselves.. I've found a place who hopefully can make the brushes closeby so I will call them tomorrow and ask. If not I will order from the website.
Can I unplug the whole ABS and bring it to the workshop?
Again thanks alot, I'm getting more positive about this now..

You dont need to unplug the whole ABS. There are 2 bolts holding the ABS motor. You only need to remove the motor (A7 in the picture). You can do it yourself, noneed to take it to a shop. For more info read this. You will have all the info you need to do it yourself & save mega$$$$$$$$

problems fixed. 10 dollars
Yes. art_arev
The brushes were worn out, inside it was alot of dust. I understand why they have to change them every 10-12 years. But why is Mercedes Benz not informing about this? Only because of money? I called the local place that makes them and he had 4 perfekt pieces. 3 dollars each. Was fixed in an hour. Found some snow in the forest and hit the pedal, worked PERFECT .
Thanx alot for your tips art_
This is a heavy sled and I did not like a winter without ABS, very easy fix.

Yes I was referring to the AUX Coolant pump.
A new VW one maybe an option, but if you could replace the brushes for a few dollars, that would be a cheaper option. Not sure on cost of the VW option.

If the brushes are gone then the plastic brackets/seats where the brushes are held in are gone too. Everything will be sort of melted/disintegrated inside. You will never be able to fix it.....Get a VW one. That's your best & cheapest option
