my turn!

my 98 ML does this weird vibration thingy (mainly coming from the back of the truck) when i turn the wheels left or right and start giving it some gas -- the vibration gets worse when i make sharp turns. is this normal? if not, what might be the cause/s?

tia.

No it is not normal...It is comming from your transfer case. the plantary gears and bearings are going out. in 98 MLs thery had the front to rear wheel ratio at 50-50 then in 99 they changed it to 60-40 because of your promblem. They either need to rebuild your transfer case with the new gears or replace the whole thing...I have done both for this promblem!!

I think the transfer cases go for $2300 and it is 4 hrs of labor...at what ever you dealer charges

Yes I did...I said there is no way a dealer can replace a chip in the ECU. Mercedes dosent have a removal chip. For your promblem there is a DTB on reflashing the control module.Where we hook up our computer and change the softwear the the ECU. Hop this helps!

Cars and boats!
ML God.... i have a question about my 2000 ML55!!! It seems that ive had this problem since day 1. When I am out and the car is moving slowly allowing heat to accumulate under the hood, for some reason the power steering locks up and the steering wheel gets really tight. It goes away when i turn off the car and start it back up but comes back later as heat accumulates under the hood and the car isnt moving at least fast enough to get some air inside the hood. Ive spoke with my local dealer about this problem and though they have replaced the whole power steering system twice already, the problem continues to persist. Everybody is stumped. My ML55 isnt the only one with this problem. I have spoken to others and many have the same problem. What should I do?

I have worked on these things for 6yrs and I have never had this complaint. Is you cooling fan turning on under your hood?? It sounds to me like a bad pump or rack...Good Luck and keep me informed on what they found!!

MCS GPS receiver?

Tim, do you remember which 8 channel GPS receiver the MCS uses? Is it an Oncore GT Plus?

p0170 p0173

A couple of months ago when we accelerated the car it would reach 20 25 mile an hour then it would loose power. It happened predominantly when it was cold. After you turned it on and off it would run fine. I looked into possible causes and thought it may be a blocked cat or cracked cat. I then got made redundant, and haven't been able to get it fixed. It got worse culminating on a very rainy day with it running extremely badly and not able to get above 20mph at all. Breakdown company had no idea, But the codes he got where p0170 p0173, p0 301 p0306 p0302. When filling in paper work he fill in other number regarding miss fire of cylinders but these i believe didnt show as i had to force him to connect it and read off the codes my self. It now sounds horrendous.

some research suggests MAf - to be replaced, or the EGR Valve, the fuel pump ? I still for some reason i dont know why believe it stems from the cat/s on the left of the car which may be causing other issues. any adviced

MLgod,

I have a couple of problems on my 2002 ML320.
1. I have the following warning lights on my car see picture below for details. My check engine light is as a result of a p0406 code. Can you tell me which part to replace to fix this?

2. As you can see my Brake light is on. It only comes on when I step on the brakes. Im not sure if its because my brake pads are close to replacement time or if its a sensor problem.

3. This is the most alarming one. Ive had my lovely ML shut off completely while driving on the highway. The radio will still be on but the motor and power steering will be off. I had to pull over my truck, put the gear in park and restart it. I havent been able to figure out the issue. Is this related to the P0406 code?

Thank you very much in advance.

500 ML
ML God you are a welcome addition to this forum. My wife's 2003 500ML has had a history of issues mostly just annoying things. Presently, there are two issues. First, the navigation system has stopped functioning. My wife has used the navigation system to play CD's, did this contribute or cause this malfunction. Any ideas on the repair? Second, there is an intermittent noise, dull, ossilating, drone that appears to be coming from beneath the dash towards the center of the vehicle. It's driving me crazy. Any answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

God gave up on ML's endless problems! I think he is now working at a Honda dealership or became a Maytag service man. LOL

Brakes are still squealing...

Please help. I have changed both my rotors and my pads, but there is still a squealing from the right rear (the rest are fine). Could it be a pinched hose or could the caliper be bad? Thanks!
