It does happen. I don't know what you mean by fail......
If there is a leak, it is the seal between the pump & the reservoir. No need to replace the reservoir, only the seal.

If it whines, it could be the diaphragm inside the reservoir. It can break. In this case you need a new reservoir + new seal.
Buying original reservoir &/or seal is very important.

The car whines when you turn the steering wheel.

What exactly is the problem with your reservoir?

If it's empty, there must be a visual indication of where the leak is.

Keep an eye on the fluid level & check if you have PS fluid on your driveway.

Since you are not saying exactly were the leak is , I have to guess.....
Stick your fingers under the reservoir & see if its the source of your leak.
Second option is the hose from the steering rack to the radiator.
Were is the leak? Is it on the left side under the radiator or under the PS pump?
If it is option 1 , then get a new seal. Option 2 requires a new upgraded clamp.

the leak is not coming from the hose coming from the radiator to the steering rack. The leak coming from the area of the reservoir because i can see fluid on the power steering pump.

Get the reservoir seal part # A000 466 18 80. It will cost you between $5-00 to $15-00 & change it.
