2003 ML350 Metal Noise?
Hey all, new member here with unfortuanly a problem.
The car is a 2003 ML350 with 140k miles on it.
The problem is when driving, both forward and also backwards there is a metal clanging noise.
I looked under the car for anything loose that could be rubbing, the brakes, etc but nothing. I do have an exhaust leak so please ignore that.
Does anyone know what kind of problem would make this noise?

To me it sound like something is hanging and touching the driveshaft. It sounds like some electric plug o hand brake cable ringing the driveshaft. That kind of high pitched sound can come from high quality steel (like driveshaft). It is something that is on the outside rather than inside (i.e. inside transfer case or diff). Taking into account frequency it might be that something is touching one of cardan joints or a piece of steel plate that is used for driveshaft balancing is hanging off the driveshaft due to rust.
Does it go away at any speed or it says there increasing in frequency according to speed?
I would get the car up and check along the driveshaft if something is touching it. Also check Cardan joints (u-joint) and support bearing.
