foglight problem

hey all,
we got PIAA fog's installed on the brush grill up front. One of them apparently went dead, drivers side. I checked the fuses, connections, etc...all were fine.

How much would it be to replace one of these fog's? This isn't the kind where it says "PIAA" across the front of the bulb with the white cover. These are the smaller, more circular ones that emit a green/yellow light out.

Thanks all!

Can I open those fog's up? They're attached to the brush guard... I see there's a screw on each side of the thing...I thought u would have to replace the entire thing. I'll take a pic of it later today and post it up. Thanks man.

yup

thats all you need to do . unscrew the back cover and pull it out you should see the connector like this..

you should see something like this at the back

another shot,,, this one is from my Hella 500 and I assumed you have a PIAA Ion type, the back should be similar.

then replace the H3 halogen bulb

Ok, I will unscrew that one and take a look at the back. Where would I be able to get a bulb like that? Would I have to special order somewhere or would a place like Autozone have it? thanks guys for all the help.

Ok, i went outside and took it off the holder. Then I looked around back, but nothing like yours. Instead, there were two screws, one on each side. I unscrewed them and the "ball" split in two. Inside, was a H3 piggy-tail bulb. But after taking it out and taking a closer look, it wasn't the bulb...still intact and fine. When I was putting it back together, I found out that the power line had been severed! How, I don't know, but the ground was still fine.

Is there anyway to replace this myself? The line obviously goes to the connector under the hood...I'm guessing my independent is gonna have to replace the line? Thanks.

I see the wire has been severed, but only half the sheet around the wire (green colored) is gone. Can I solder it back together? I'm thinking just need to bridge it back is really what it needs and it should be all good.

After soldering, just put it back in the plastic protective tube, right? Would it be bad to solder?

You could solder, but the easiest would be to use crimp-on connectors. You can get these at any auto parts or Home Depot. You will need to buy crimping pliers, if you don't have them ($5-15) and some insulated splicing connectors of the proper size (probably 14-18 ga blue ones). Read the instructions that come with the pliers.

You have to cut the wire and clean up each end, then strip each end back 1/4" or so. Then crip the connector on with the appropriately sized section of the plier.

Takes a couple minutes total if you've done it before.

By crimp on connectors, you mean like a spade on one end and a connector on the other end type?

That's one type, but there are dozens of different ones. You need the ones that have a female end both sides (looks like a 3/4" long tube). You put each end of the cut wire into one end and it forms a connection.

hmmmm....maybe be hard to find at a homedepot :p

I'm assuming it's in the electrical section, so I'll pop by there tomorrow and try and take a look. Probably a long shot, but would you happen to have a picture of it? Thanks man for the help!

Crimp-on connectors

Here's a link that shows the different types of connectors:

http://www.allelectronics.com/pdf/hardware.pdf

You want the "Butt Connectors" (no wise remarks!), probably in 16-14 ga size. I'd go to an auto parts store, since they carry only low-voltage stuff. Home Deport probably has them, but harder to find.

haha...butt connectors. I think the radio shack down the street from me has these types of connectors and stuff. I've seen their kits and such. Cool, thanks man. I'll post how it turns out tomorrow after I give it a whirl.

Found butt connectors on homedepot.com...damn 100pk for $6.58. It's cheap but what the hell am i gonna do with 98 left :p

http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS...gnj.0&MID=9876

upon further research, radioshack does have them 16pk for $1.69...much better Looks like i'll be headin' down to them for these.

Eh, sorry for all the questions man...but do i have to get the "crimp butt connectors" or just regular ones? http://www.radioshack.com/search.asp...onnector&SRC=1
that's their search page for butt connectors.

Alright, cut the wire, stripped on both ends, stuck it inside the "butt connector" :p. Crimped the thing, re-assembled and flipped the switch! All systems good!

Thanks guys for all the help, that's why I love MBWorld for tips like this
