Motor Oil for ML320 (1998)

Motor Oil for ML320 (1998)
I understand that the correct motor oil for a 1998 ML 320 is Mobil 1 (0W40). I have not been able to locate this oil for a client.
Why would a car company use such an unusual oil????? Any suggestions on where to obtain this type of oil (I tried Mobil THEY don't stock it??).
