Updating Stereo of 1999 ML with one from 2000-2003
Hi. I have a 1999 ML430 with the stock Bose stereo/cassette player. I've noticed that subsequent models (2000-2003) had a much nicer stereo. Is it a simple procedure where you pull the old one out and then slide the new one in (removing the tray below the old Bose stereo) or are there electrical issues involving a different connector?
I really like to keep OEM stereos in my cars, so it would be great if I could just get the updated one to fit.
BUT, would I be better off just buying a current stereo from BestBuy with Appleplay, bluetooth, etc, or is that a wiring nightmare?

I have an 04 ML350. I am opting for an android type stereo to replace my OEM radio. This will give me all those up to date functions, including WiFi, that my tablet has...right in the ML. I plan to re-use the existing BOSE speakers and hopefully phone mic and GPS antenna, but replace everything else. Looking for a good place to put a 10" subwoofer that will give a factory look.

I replaced the stock radio (cassette, cd changer, non gps) with an aftermarket Pioneer 7 inch touch screen. I used the stock bose speakers with with a decent sound quality amp. (much easier than trying to use the factory amp) I managed to find a wiring diagram that allowed me to still use the stock subwoofer and let me use my aftermarket amp WITH THE STOCK WIRING. No wiring nightmare, no removing door panels. The hardest part was removing the factory amp. It is possible and it sounds amazing. A little advice if you go aftermarket......buy the antennae adapter. You'll need it. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions.
