98 ML won't engage any gear after conductor plate replacement

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster. My trans would start slipping and not engage at all after car is warm. No check engine light though.

I had oil in the trans connector at the trans and the plug housing was stuck to the conductor plate. The little 7mm bolt in the conductor plate connector would just spin and spin and no matter how hard I pulled the plug housing would not come out. So I replaced the whole conductor plate, cleaned the crap off the valve body as carefully as I could with brake cleaner, and replaced all the fluid (it all dripped out from sitting and waiting for the parts) including the torque converter. the fluid was absolutely filthy brown.

I also used an iCarsoft MBii scanner to read the trans codes and delete them all (had 1-2 2-3 3-4 and 4-5 solenoid issues, intermittent slipping, and one more I forgot). the trans connector at the TCU was bone dry.

Now car won't shift at all, warm or cold. When I put it in gear it feel like its engaging and rpms drop about 100rpm but the car won't move.

Any possible clue as to what it may be? Trans physically busted?

Thanks in advance!

You probably did not install the selector valve correctly. Now you have to do the job all over again.

I'm pretty sure I set it correctly, but I will take the pan off and report back.

You were right, what a dumb *** move not to check that. Thank you for the tip!

The notch is a little broken, not sure if I broke it or if this contributed to the original issues, see pic please. What do you think?

I believe this is the part. Visit the dealer with your full vin # and the photo and order these parts. Hopefully the plastic piece is included and not part of the valve body.

there is no part number for the plastic connector is there? it seems i have to disassemble the valve body because the rod won't slide out due to a tab on the metal gasket. maybe i can cut that tab off and spot weld it back on?

No there isn't. And as I said previously it might be part of the valve body, $1,450.

Good find, then do it. Search YouTube for disassembly of the 163 valve body.

I found this from Sonnax:

seems that the plastic piece pops on and off.

Anyways, thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it.
