Post ML 320 door lock problem

I have a 2000 ML320 . While cleaning the door, I touched the lock assembly in the open passenger side door & i accidentally touched and flipped up, a black part up so now that black part has clicked into a vertical position, instead of the open horizontal position. As a result the door doesn't close any more - the vertical black part is preventing the door from closing.

The lock makes the open and lock noises both when I use the remote and when I use the switch inside the car -- with the engine on or off. But this little black part doesn't seem to flip back horizontal.

There must be a simple way to unclick the black piece that has locked in the vertical position. I would really appreciate it if someone could suggest how.

Stick your finger behind the black latch and pull it as you pull on either the outside or inside handle.

Thank you very much Maj Dundee and DrX. Your suggested solution worked. It was that simple.

Because the door was already open, I wasn't pulling on the door handle. The minute I did that, the lever fell back into place.

Thanks again
