2002 ML320 SRS AirBag Off lights ON!!

Hi All,

I have a 2002 ML 320 W163 that has both the "SRS" and "Air Bag Off" lights lit on the dash board. I have scanned the memory and the only error that comes back is the "occupant/child sensor" as a problem. Research on this board and others indicate that this sensor is a very well known problem on Mercedes automobiles.

Now, having read the pros and cons of using an emulator to get around this problem, I now know that "as is" none of the air bags on my vehicle are working as they should. So if using the emulator allows all of my air bags to operate in the event of an accident that seems to be a safer situation.

In my State, as far as I know, it is illegal to carry a child in the front seat of an automobile so no worry there, also newer USA brand automobiles come with a switch to disable the front, passenger airbag if one so desires.

The emulator that I intend to use can be wired to send an "unoccupied" or "occupied" signal by shorting the indicated solder points on the chip. There are four sets of contact points and depending on your vehicle you short one set for "unoccupied" and a second set for "occupied". NOW, if I short the one set and run a switch to the contact points on the second set I would be able to switch the front passenger side air bag "on" or "off" at will. I would then have as safe a situation as any "new" vehicle in my State.

My problem, and the reason that I am posting this thread is that I have not been able to find a photo or diagram of the exact wires that I need to cut in order to interface the emulator. Every instruction or set of photos are of some other model of Mercedes and are different from mine. I have looked under the seat and can not find a Yellow plug with the three wires that everyone talks about. Is there anyone on this board that can tell me or indicate or point me to a source that will identify the proper wire or plug for my vehicle? I do not want to have to remove the seat or disturb other wires or connectors to locate the one I am looking for.

HELP, and thanks in advance.

Underneath the passenger seat you will find a separate connector with the three colored wires in the diagram below. Brn is GROUND, Red is voltage, 7 White is signal.

Separate the connector and install the emulator to the harness side, not the seat side.

Thanks Maj. for your rapid response. I was hoping for some sort of a photo as when I look under my seat I don't see several connectors in a row. There is a large black box with a large connector and a very small connector with two wires. Would you know what color the jacket for the wires I need to find is, there is a grey jacketed wire coming from the seat to the black box, it goes in with no visible connector.

Do I need to remove a cover to get to the connectors?

Thanks again for your help.

The black box has nothing to do with the seats. You have to look for a harness that comes out of the floor and goes into the seat.

Key out of ign. and remove the neg. battery cable. Then remove the 4 bolts holding the seat down and fold the seat back and look for connector X55/4 and find the three wires in the diagram I previously supplied.
