Port match & polish

Hi MBWorld,

I have a 1999 ML320 with about 330,000 kms. Everything works great, well maintained. I drive about 50 miles a day to work and back and regularly drive 500 miles round trip to the cottage.

My only concern is high oil consumption which I believe to be valve seals. It only puffs smoke out the tailpipe after excessive idling or on some startups. It doesn't leak.

I am a strong DIY guy with lots of experience, a tear down and mild rebuild doesn't worry me. I simply haven't had a Mercedes Benz motor apart before. I have only seen images of heads from an auto recycler online in terms of visualizing the valve seal replacement and I wondered about port matching and intake/exhaust port smoothing based on what I was seeing.

My last rebuild on a Toyota included me doing a port match and polish to the cylinder head. Does anyone have experience with having the heads off of the v6 Mercedes engines (C240, ML320, etc)? I have googled but found nothing. Anyone know, will a stock MB benefit from a port match and polish? On the Toyota it made a dramatic difference.

Thanks for any opinions offered.

Kev
