Transmission Fluid change, how many Liters?

Hello, [Re: 98 ML320]

As suggested by many on this newsgroup, yesterday I changed
the transmission fluid (removed the pan, cleaned the pan,
cleaned the area where the gasket is, removed the filter,
put new filter, put new gasket, and then I put 2 liters of
Mercedes-Benz Transmission Fluid in the pan, then I put back
the pan carefully and put the bolts on. No leaks.

Since this truck doesn't have the dip stick to measure
the transmission fluid, I couldn't verify the amount of
fluid I put in is ok ? Does Bentley manual say how many
liters need to be put in? I won't drive the truck until
I am sure.

One solution might be to go buy the dip stick. Is that what
you guys (would do) did ?

Comments/suggestions are appreciated.

By the way, AT dip stick (also known as "workshop tool")
is available at the dealership for $59).

Those who have changed your transmission fluid, how many
quarts/liters of fluid did you put in after the fluid+filter change?

You need 3.75 quarts

Hi,

You need 3 3/4qts of ATF Fluid. And yes you will need the Dipstick to check the fluid.

2 Liters is not enough.

Its good to keep track of what comes out and just replace it. My manual says 7.9 quarts.

I agree with you regarding keeping track of how much fluid comes out.
Obviously, I didn't do that.

About 7.9 quarts, when we open the pan, I dob't believe 7.9 quarts
of transmission fluid comes out. From the fluid that I collected, I dind't
think 7.9 quarts came out.

I guess best way to be sure is to get a dip stick. By the way, I did
order it on-line for $35. It should come in tomorrow. I will let you
guys know what the dip stick will tell me ;-)

later...

I've read you have to drain the torque converter too...Maybe that's why.

Since most of us don't have a dip stick, you should put in exactly the SAME amout as how much came out, and a couple of guys already mentioned that. When had this done, just under 5 liters came out. Two liters sounds like really not enough, unless somehow you only drained 2 liters, in which case I don't know WTF... And yes, having a dip stick would be usefull.

I went to ebay and was able to buy a transmission fluid stick and counter pins that need replaced when checking your own fluids for around $24 for the stick and 5 replacement pins

I know I'm digging up an old thread, but I'll be doing mine (on the ML500) this Friday. This is the method I'll be using:

1. Drain Trans pan (Measure fluid lost).
2. Remove and clean Trans pan (including magnet).
3. Replace Filter and Gasket.
4. Replace pan.
5. Refill amount of fluid lost via dipstick/fill tube.
6. Shift through all gears (at idle), then check level at operating temp (in Park, with dipstick that I bought).

Does anyone have any strong feelings on me skipping the Pilot Bushing? I don't want to mess with it, since it's not giving me any trouble. This is more of a routine maintenance thing.

Thanks

when replacing transmission fluid, does there need to be any sort of system reset? I ask because, i had to refill lost fluid, but gears are not staying engaged.....

That really depends on the make and model, but most vehicles take anywhere between 4 to 12 liters. Be sure to check the owner's manual or look up the specific fluid capacity online. While researching for another project, I found this helpful tool: PCB Circuit Calculator , which provides precise technical estimates for circuit-related parameters.
