back up light stays on while in forward gears

back up light stays on while in forward gears
HELLO well me again and still a newbie, why would my back up light stay on in forward gears put in park it goes out also left signal light will not work when backup light stays on. Any ideas or suggestion would be very much appreciated, Thank you in advance,silly huh, 1999 ml 430

The back-up lamp switch inside the Range Recognition Switch is faulty and must be replaced.
This calls for removal of the shifter and then you must dismantle the shifter to replace the switch.
You have two options, buy a used shifer or replace the Range Sw. which depends on your ability to do so.

You have two options, buy a used shifer or replace the Range Sw. which depends on your ability to do so.
thank you i had it apart and you would not believe the things i found in there bobby pins and plastic tooth picks i think they have been in there a while, was wondering why i couldn't get it to shift to lower gears, NOW I KNOW, and they probably shorted the switch too. ordered a used shifter and will replace as soon as it arrives. thank you again for your responce and diagram

good afternoon as suggested by Maj. Dundee i replaced the shifter today and reverse light still stays on when in gear. any other suggestions im scratching my head here

The reverse lamp switch is very simple. Once the key is turned on or the eng. is running, fuse #16 B-U Lamp Fuse is activated and the GRAY wire from the fuse will show 12v.
When the shifter is put in REVERSE the Back-Up switch closes the contact and activates both Back-Up lamps via the other GRAY wire.
You either have bought a faulty shifter with the same problem or there is wiring problem.

1st made sure all plugs into shifter were correctly pushed in, then remembered a couple of things that i did before on my SLK , disconnected the battery for 30 minutes then reconnected , basically rebooting all on board computers. it worked no more reverse light staying on , so thank you all for the information ,i have decided when this ML 430 in finished im selling it and going back to an older MB probably look for a good 124
