Exclamation ml270 front right hand wheel locking up occasionally

hi everybody, new to this forum. i own a 2000 ML270cdi, have done for a year or so!, recently, and for no apparent reason the front drivers road wheel(RHD) has locked up and stopped me fairly briskly!!!!,the BAS orange dash light comes and stays on. briefly the Triangle with exclaimation mark illuminates during the action then goes off!, the BAS light stays on, but resets when the engine is switched off and left for 2mins!..........when restarted lights are off! but the locking may occur again at any time?....i have noticed that the tyre on this wheel is worn on the outside only?? the other three wheels and tyres are ok!.....when the 40amp BAS/ETC fuse is removed from the fuse box the problem does NOT recur!! just the warning beeper continuously sounds which is understandable.. has anybody any ideas before i spend €50 at the MB garage locally for a plug in??? cheers ya`all.

Welcome, please post a photo of the ML.

Have you done any investigation? I would check the wheel speed sensor, wiring and connectors, and whatever toothed ring it might be reading. Are all four wheels and tires the same size, brand and age?

hi, thanks for the reply, in order>> all 4 wheels same MB make and size 4 tyres all the same, however this particular tyre is worn on the outside, more so than the other front tyre......otherwise i have not yet fully checked the wiring or components. There is no play in the steering , and the car runs straight when no-hands on! brakes (minus ABS etc) brake in straight line with no judder or movement ! the car drives very well , minus the added electronics of course!

Remove the wheel in question, carefully inspect the wheel speed sensor, wiring, toothed wheel and caliper. Tell us what you find, and if you post photos it will be best.

hi again, having removed wheel in question, everything looks ok , except, the anti-roll bar suspension rubber has disintegrated, resulting in play in the front bushing area!! could this contribute to the "locking" problem????

Not usually. It sounds like this vehicle needs significant maintenance. Can you post a clear photo of the wheel speed sensor, and the toothed ring, and the wiring connections?

Was any damage done to this vehicle? You mentioned damaging the wiring. What happened?

the possible damage i referred to was caused during the fires we had here( Monchique The Algarve) in Aug 2018.....having to evac our area , i had to negotiate falling burning trees etc etc,.....i imagine that is how the roll-bar rubber got hot and damaged, i just wondered if any other damage had ocurred, it appears not..., will try the photograph idea tomorrow,....the ML has done 150,000 documented and serviced miles from new...2 owners, and a pretty much full service history!!! ok happy new year to all!! more later

Happy New Year! Glad you made it though the fires safely. Let's see a photo of the wheel speed sensor and the wiring.
