98 ML320 Temp Gauge does not = scan tool
My dash gauge registers about 40 some degrees C, but the scan tool gives me a steady reading of 85-86 degrees C when up to operating temperature. I put a third thermometer in the coolant over flow tank and the temperature reading was well above 40 degrees C. 74 degrees C as I recall. I suspect there are both a temp coolant sensor and a temp sending unit (for the gauge). Am I correct? If there is a temp sending unit for the gauge.....where is it?
Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your feedback. I did the "feel" test on the recirc motor and did not seem to feel anything although I could hear a faint high pitch noise. I removed the plug then reconnected it and tried again. Nothing. Then after about a minute later, after I turned the key off, I noticed a noise and checked the pump. It felt like it was running but then it shut off after about 5 or so seconds. I then started the motor and monitored the temperature "the feel way" on the input and output of the pump. Both hoses came up to temp at the same time. I let the motor run to get to full temp. (~85c), the scan tool tells me ~85c and the gauge still reads ~40c.
Still stumped.

Well, the only suggestion I have is to locate the high pitch noise and or replace Coolant Cir. Pump.
