The key fob has a small chip in it that communicates with the car. if it's not recognized you will get a start error message in the instrument cluster.
Others might chime in but search for this it's been answered plenty of times. Next to the low range button in the center stack there is a red light blinking. I forget the sequence but that would also let you know that the key is working.

I have read through a few posts relating too it but my case is slightly different i have no message saying start error it has a normal key without the fob that has always started it as soon as i connect my battery my alarm goes off i have charged battery overnight and been advised by previous owner possibly the £10 petrol was not enough to start it and to put another £10-15 in as was sat for a while and try start again then am i right in thinking the fob activates and deactivates the immobiliser or can my other key with just the blade and if anyone can clarify that the fob not working causes this attempt to start then cut off thank you for reply and help greatly appreciated i know this is widely covered on here and i have looked through a few posts if possible i am going to upload a video of my attempts today then can hear and see what i do incase anyone who is experienced with this model can help thanks for help in advance and taking time to reply

Does the key look like this? This is what you will get from the dealer, programmed by MB and has a transponder inside. If so, then yes I use one of these everday.
