2004 ML350 - No CEL, won't pass Smog, Drive Cycle Won't Reset after 1000 miles
2004 ML350 - 188k miles - this has always been one of the 'good' ones. Runs excellent, fuel mileage has hardly changed.
IT is due for a smog inspection and registration. There is no check-engine-light on, however it will not pass smog as the computer does not have 'historical records' according to the mechanic.
They suggested that I drive the car a few hundred miles to reset the cycling of the engine diagnostics. So far I have driven over 1000 miles and it still is unable to pass Smog.
Any suggestions? Has anyone run into issues like this before? Would anyone recommend resetting the computer and has a procedure to do so?
Anything helps.

Update
Update - took 1000 miles of driving before the computer reset, as well as the service interval indicator being reset after a oil change/B maintenance. Passed Smog.
196,475 miles and she starts right up. These vehicles really do last if you take care of them.
