Winter Tires ...

It has been a while since I was on last (long enough that my profile was removed, without sending me a notice) and want to get some opinions on winter tires. I have the Dunlop Sport M2's which were the only winters available when I first bought them. At the end of last winter one of them got a huge spike in it and the tire ended up a complete wreck. In the event that I can't find a similarly worn single tire (extremely unlikely that I will) I am looking for 4 new ones. The choices now are a little better with Pirelli (Scorpion Ice) and the Hankook (W300 Ice Bear) having come to the party. The Dunlop’s are the most pricey of the bunch and the Hankook being the most reasonable.

Does anyone have any experience with the Hankook line?

So you need 17s? Not a lot of choices. The Dunlops in 255/60 are around $152. Pirelli Scorpions 275/55 are $155. You could just replace 2 of the Dunlops if their not too worn.

Lots more options in 16s. I'm still running some 5-year old Yokohamas that work great (only put them on for snow).

Just ordered

Pirelli Scorpion snow and ice...I live in PA, and the 29k I have on these Dunlop 5000's leaves me NO tread for the winter. I'll post back after initial use.

Consider the Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow 255/60/17's. I believe that they will fit your rims, are considerably cheaper than the 275's, and will provide better winter traction due to their slighly lesser width.

That's good advice. Narrower and taller is always better for snow & ice. I just disregarded this and ordered the 275/55-17s. I have the factory flares which make skinny tires look extra wimpy. I've been running 245/70-16s which have worked great.
