My ML500 ate an oil seal
My serpentine belt came off it got chewed up in the process. I noticed afterwards a significant oil leak from behind the crankshaft pully (harmonic balancer) I got the pully off no problem and was greeted with the pic below. I'm guessing that as the belt got wrapped behind the pulley that it also pulled out (hopefully) most of the seal. Before this the driver's bank of lifters was making a little noise that you could hear at idle with the hood up and passenger side seemed quiet. After this the passenger side is making a fair bit of noise but nothing too catastrophic sounding. I'm guessing that to be safe I should drop the oil pan in case the pickup screen is clogged with debris. I'm hoping this is causing low oil pressure and could be what the noise was. Unfortunately the truck was driven for about 7 minutes before I realized what happened and shut it down. At least the remnants of the seal will be easy to remove.
