Overheat during prolonged slow speed

My 2004 ML 400CDI (Diesel V8) overheats in long periods of slow speed like in long car ques or at idle for long time. It usually goes op to 120C just below the amber band before it shuts down to limp mode. The ”low coolant level” light some times stays on even through the coolant level is between min and max. Some times the ”low collant level” light stays on without any problems with over-temp. I don’t know what the problem is. I have replaced the coolant reservoir on top of the engine and filled with coolant to the correct level but the problem just won’t go away. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
