Horn not working

I did a search, but did not find anything related to my problem. My horn just stopped working in the ML over the weekend. I didn't have a chance to check anything out other than the horn "will" work if you hit the panic button on the key fob, but "will not" if you try to hit the steering wheel. Any ideas as to what I should check? The vehicle is still under warranty, but the dealership is two hours away so if it is something simple I would like to fix it instead of making a trip to the dealer.

Thanks.

I think they use two separate horns for alarm and horn. Start with the simple stuff studly.... Check power and ground to the horn. Then check the fuse.

If you have power and ground at the horns then a ground wire could have come off behind the airbag on the steering wheel or it could be a bad clockspring. Autogunner.

Thanks saturnstyl and autogunner. I am traveling and don't have the vehicle with me so hopefully this weekend I will have a chance to take a look at it. Let me know if there is anything else that it might be so that while I am looking around I can do it all at once.

ml horn

I believe there was a recall on the ml horns. I had mine replaced and now sounds more like a european horn. Call your dealer.

If it turns out the horns are bad, I have a set of ML55 ones just sitting here. I had replaced my original ML320 horns with the ML55's - we all know why, don't we??. I took them out before returning my 320 as trade for a new 05 500, so I have these very nice sounding horns that I don't need. BTW - my ML500 horns are the same as the ML55's. They're yours for a small fee + shipping if you or anyone needs them.

Sorry everyone. I have been busy with the holidays so I haven't been doing anything on the vehicles. As soon as I get a chance I will take a look at the ML to see what is up or if I am near my dealer stop in there.

Darkmann, I might take you up on your offer when I know what I am dealing with.

Thanks again and happy holidays everyone!!!

Update

Sorry everyone for the delay in getting back on this, but the holidays were busy. Hope everyone had a great one!!

As to the horn issue. The horns are toast. It is disappointing that the ML has only 17,000 miles on it and the horns have rusted to nothing. The dealer tells me this is a common problem with the 1998 to 2001 ML's as the horns are located down low and just in front of the tires. They are going to replace them under warranty, but I will have to spend 4 hours in drive time up and back.

Can anyone tell me where they moved the horns to? I would like to have the dealer relocate mine to the newer higher location. Otherwise I will be back doing this in another 17,000 miles.
