2001 M-class w163 key Synchronizing not completing

2001 M-class w163 key Synchronizing not completing
I changed the batteries in the key fob for three different keys and all have the same result. So I don’t thinks it’s the key but that the car’s responder.
Synchronizing remote control
If the remote control does not function correctly and the batteries are in order, the system may have to be resynchronized.
Turn key in steering lock to position 2, then to position 0 and remove.
Within 10 seconds, push and hold button 0 while pushing button o five times.
Release the button, and press 10, lo or E once.
[works once and then no buttons work thereafter]
Check all functions. The remote control should once again be operational. [NOT operational at all]
Since this is not working for my 2001 ML320, what is the next step?
