Question Max tire width on stock 19" wheels?

Hi,

What's the max acceptable tire section width on the stock 8J x 19 ET60 wheels??

My W164

will soon head onto the streets on Pirelli Ice & Snow in 255/50-19, and my dealer will store the stock Bridgestone Turanza ER30's it came on for the winter - no doubt hoping that I'll end up going for the €5K Carlsson or AMG wheels when spring comes - or, alternatively, selling me another set of stock wheels (they're not wildly expensive, and I like the design).

The first option, however, has not met with full approval from my better half's side , so I'm looking for a less expensive way of getting slightly wider tires on the car for summer driving, using the stock wheels.

The best match for 255/50-19, using the tire size calculator is of course a 285/45-19, which is no doubt too wide to put on an 8" wide wheel - but a 275/45-19 would "only" make the speedo 1% off - could that be an possibility??

TIA for your input

Kind regards,
Birger

Yes, the 275/45s are good. Minimum recommended width is 8.5", but 8" should be fine. You can find them in the following brands: Michelin 4x4 Diamaris, Toyo Proxes S/T, Pirelli P-Zero Rosso (summer), Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow. You will be spending anywhere from $230 to $420 a tire.

Just curious, why spend that much to get just 20 mm more of tire width?

I have the AMG which are 8.5 wide and 255 tires and airmatic.

I have notice that the interior side is very close to a metal bar; will check it better.

The other option is to put 4 spacers (Like H&R). If I'm not wrong with 15mm spacers you have more than enough space for 285 wheels.

Best Regards.

I think it's not problem with the rim; the problem is interior rubbing.

Best Regards.

I have 295/40s on mine all around and no rubbing. Then again, I don't have airmatic. As long as the offset is correct, there shouldn't be any problem. I also checked in case I lower mine with the Brabus springs (1.5" lower) and there is still room.

Problem is that stock offset is ET60 and ET58 with AMG Wheels.

This is why I think that spacers are necesary.

Best Regards.

I just installed my Ice & Snows yesterday and am going skiing Thursday. I, too, am looking to go to wider wheels in the Spring, upon spousal approval! I tend to agree with Flipsonic to just put wider tires on seems like a lot of expense for not much gain, and 8" is below Michelin's recommended minimum width for the 275s. However, Pirelli lists an 8" wheel as okay for their 285/45-19 Asimmetricos. As you say, you might need spacers.

I would tend to just run the stock ones until such time as you can swing the wider wheels for 285s or 295s. There may be some AMG 63 owners next year wanting to upgrade and selling their take-offs!
