Well, that is the main reason, I am afraid to hit one of them by mistake while on highway, it happened a few times on the street and the downshift was not nice for me or the car.

ML 500, John Deere tractor
I'm with jdr here. I have no use for the buttons and have no idea why I would ever use them. And yes, I'm gripping the wheel properly.
