ML320CDi VS ML280CDi

I just picked up a ML320CDi 2 days ago. The car is great, good to drive. But there is a new ML280CDi which is $5000(Australian dollars) cheaper
The engine seem the same just less power. I think it is only a computer setting.

ML 320 CDi
Hi,

This question has been discussed before i.e. difference between 320 and 280 CDi but without proper resolution. Does anyone know?????

However for the price difference previous guesses are that there are both mechanical (turbo etc.) and software differences. After all two different sets of software ( 280 and 320) should be of exactly same monetary value so it would really be a p... take if th mechanicals were identical.

Cheers,

I just found out ML320cdi and ML280cdi are using same engine. But 320 is using bigger turbo and computer, so it has more power. Same as C-class, c180k, c200k, c230k are using same size engine.
I have never drive ML280cdi, so I can't tell is it power enough, but I drive my 320, it is mad , very powerful. $5000 more?!?! worth it? I don't know.

From 2006 ML 320 CDI - from 2009 Audi Q5 S-Line 3.0 TDI DSG - from 2011 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE
It's worthy! Sure! The 320 CDI and 280 CDI are same size engines, but with many differences. What is important is that the 320 CDI errogates more and this is very obvious in driving. I test-drive both cars, and the 320 CDI convinced me in some minutes, while the 280 CDI is like driving a New Hyndai SantaFE, in terms of weight/power. The 280 CDI means you own just a MB, you own it's inside and exterior apparence, but the 320 CDI means all that plus you own a good car! A powerful car, especially in the reaching of speed when you are at 100-120km/hour and you suddenly want to overpass someone or free the lane as someone is coming faster from behind (this is a MUST in todays traffic and = safety!). But especially starting from a stop you feel the difference betwen 280 CDI and the 320 CDI and please do not forget (!!!!) MB has engineered the 320 CDI so that consumes the exact equal quantity of fuel in every comparison giving you more power and value to the car, during the time you use it, and especially when time to sell it will come!

MB specialists in Germany advise everyone who can order an diesel ML to order the 320 CDI as a better engine, certainly.

Had been considering a ML320CDI myself and now this...

Extra confusion in possible purchase (in Australia) but...

The ML280CDI base model is $5000 more than the (old) base ML320CDI but the base model is no longer available. For the ML320CDI, it is only available as a Luxury model as is the ML350 now. The Luxury package is not available on the ML280CDI at all so the goalposts have moved !!! It isn't a $5000 difference but now a $13,000 upgrade to the ML320CDI...

ML280CDI (Base) - $77,900
ML320CDI (Luxury) - $90,900

Some other changes to option packages including the addition of a reversing camera and TV tuner to the COMAND package (increased price though). Probably because the base BMW X5 Diesel ($86,800) now includes the TV, reversing camera and so on that used to be options. The BMW is quite a bit cheaper if taking into account some of the items included but it is at the end of its life and that boot is just too small...

Complete price list is now available from the Australian Mercedes Benz website as a .pdf.

Kevin

If you download the new price list from the mercedesbenz.com.au site you will see that the base ML320CDI is no longer there. The options listed are for the 2007 model so the $8000 less model is 2006 stock (or in transit until the 2007's become available).

Darn, should've pushed the dealer for the COMAND system as a free gift before we got ours at the time! (Take advantage of the 3 month delay for our car. )

07 E280 cdi 7G-tronic
In Norway there is company that can tune a 280 cdi engine to the exact same power as a tuned 320 cdi, : 272 HP / 640 NM
Look here, OBS! Norwegian language:
