How does autostick work on the ML350??

Ok so today I traded in my '05 ML350 special edition for an '06 ML350. I feel the buttons behind the steering wheel but I press them and nothing happen. I put the car in Drive and then I can't up or downshift. am I doing something wrong here? I'd be on the freeway and attempt to downshift and nada. wtf?! Is this crap already broken!?

2007 ML63 ///AMG
When you push the buttons, is the gear change being indicated in the centre info screen (i.e. D3, D4, etc...)?

No it doesn't, that's the thing! I just shows D. I tried holding buttons up or down for a couple secs, nothing.

Each of those buttons is a rocker switch - either one can upshift or downshift. In order to activate them, you need to downshift first ie: first click has to be _towards the steering column_. WHen you do this, the display shows currently selected gear appropriate to speed (D2/D3 etc). Clicking _away from the steering column_ upshifts.

AMG
yea that was my mistake too at first i was like WTF!!!!! Coming from E55 I was used to left one downshift right up shift! Then BY mistake i felt they both could shift up and down. So just put your finger on one button and press it on both ends it has upshift and downshift.

2007 ML350 w/ full AMG package
They have actually changed this for the 07 models – there is no more rocker – just a button as found on the ML63's – upshift on the right, down on the left. Much much better!

AH IT WORKS! lol. I ended up reading the manual. I didn't know it was a rocker switch, I thought it was just left for downshift adn right for upshift lol.

the 2007 is no longer a rocker switch, one side up one side down.

I was confused as well. Doesn't make much sense as a rocker switch.
