Question- is it true that diesels get BETTER gas mileage at HIGHER SPEED??

Also, if anyone knows, why do people leave their diesel engines running so much?? I've got a farmer friend who leaves his diesel running while he naps in the afternoons? Is it cheaper to just leave a diesel running?? Silly question, but curious.
my understanding is diesels are load sensitive and use very little fuel while idling or cruising downhill - relative to gas engine. frequent starts/stops, especially in bad weather, will cause excess wear. it can take a long time to warm up a large diesel truck engine in cold weather, and to prevent fuel from gelling up in cold - sometimes better to idle. if you are driving less than 5 miles between stops, and only run into a store for a couple minutes, just idle your diesel engine.
