ML 320 CDI Oil Usage

I will take delivery of a 2008 320 CDI in about 2 weeks (order). I have read about excessive oil consumption, and I am concerned. What experience do others have with regard to oil useage?

Mine used about 1/2 qt the first 1,000 miles and another 1/2 qt during the next 4,000 miles. Since then (25,000 miles currently) it uses between 0-1/2 qt per 5,000 miles; i.e. between changes.

Not at all excessive.

Mine hasn't used a drop that I am aware of and I check it often. I change the original fill at 1169miles and it has approx 4000 on it now and it is still "right there". It wouldn't have bothered me if it used a little but it hasn't.

ps don't worry about anything with the motor in the 320cdi. Just be gentle on it for the first 1000miles or so and the gradually let it rip. If you have been hard on it don't just shut it down... let it idle for a minute or so then shut it down.

We just had our first oil change at 10,000 miles and never had to add any.

Question Oil change cdi

I can't find the dipstick in my '08 cdi. There is a cap on top of what appears as the dipstick tube but there is no eye to pull it up with.
I thought I read somewhere that they capped off the dipstick and now rely only on computer monitoring of oil life. They want to avoid people prematurely adding oil and ruining the engine.

My 08 cdi has the dipstick on the front of the motor in front of the belts curving towards the passenger side. There is a red plastic top on the dipstick. Mine is a early delivery 08.

Grab that "cap" and pull on it. There is more than one way to make a dipstick, and this is one of them.

There is no electronic oil checking on this engine, although I suspect there is a low oil warning.

What do you know, that is exactly right. Just pull and the dipstick comes up.
Thanks

08 Cdi

Mine used 1 1/2 quarts in the first 3500 miles, then 1 quart at 4500, I just rolled by 6500 and I'm down a 1/2.

I've noticed that the check oil at next fuel stop pops up every time I'm about 1/2 a quart low or lower then the last notice.

Looks like the dipstick has a 2 quart swing or range.

My dipstick is a round red topped cap too.
