ML 320 CDI Oil Usage
I will take delivery of a 2008 320 CDI in about 2 weeks (order). I have read about excessive oil consumption, and I am concerned. What experience do others have with regard to oil useage?

Mine hasn't used a drop that I am aware of and I check it often. I change the original fill at 1169miles and it has approx 4000 on it now and it is still "right there". It wouldn't have bothered me if it used a little but it hasn't.

ps don't worry about anything with the motor in the 320cdi. Just be gentle on it for the first 1000miles or so and the gradually let it rip. If you have been hard on it don't just shut it down... let it idle for a minute or so then shut it down.

Oil change cdi
I can't find the dipstick in my '08 cdi. There is a cap on top of what appears as the dipstick tube but there is no eye to pull it up with.
I thought I read somewhere that they capped off the dipstick and now rely only on computer monitoring of oil life. They want to avoid people prematurely adding oil and ruining the engine.

There is no electronic oil checking on this engine, although I suspect there is a low oil warning.

Mine used 1 1/2 quarts in the first 3500 miles, then 1 quart at 4500, I just rolled by 6500 and I'm down a 1/2.
I've noticed that the check oil at next fuel stop pops up every time I'm about 1/2 a quart low or lower then the last notice.
Looks like the dipstick has a 2 quart swing or range.
My dipstick is a round red topped cap too.
