Tip salesperson?

Picking up my 350 this weekend I hope. What is customary these days in terms of tipping your salesperson? Is it necessary?

Not sure about others but I don't think you're expected to "tip" the salesman persay...you could always give a bottle of wine or something of that nature to show your appreciation for going above and beyond in helping you (be it the case) etc. but it's all up to you

Aren't you already paying him commission whether you want to or not?

Yeah I know. I had a friend that was a big tipper with stuff like this so I didn't really know what the right thing to do is. I may go the route of bringing a bottle of vino just to show appreciation.

He should be giving you a bottle of wine and more for buying the car from him.

I would think a tip would be an insult to the sales person. Perhaps a small gift like wine would be appropriate. These guys, at least the good ones earn a comfortable living.

Tipping is for the service industry for services provided.

If you go back and use the same guy to buy another car I think that is the biggest tip you can give a guy. We didn't give our guy a tip or anything but I do like the bottle of wine idea if you really want to be nice.

I agree with not tipping your salesperson. Nice guy or not, they are out to get the most money out of you that they can when they are selling the vehicles. They are not your friends. They are the enemy. I will always be courteous to them during a deal, but I never forget that they will screw me over in a heartbeat....even the nice ones.

Do you ever buy a car before? I have never heard anyone give a tip to a salesperson? How about buying a house, a air ticket???
If you think he do a good job or he look after you so well(It never, they always just want your money), buy a wine or small christmas gift!
Remember, they got commission.

Here's a good tip:

Quit selling cars and get a real job!

Sorry, I couldn't resist

Silly, you are already paying them money out of your pocket by paying the dealer more than the car cost them. You are paying for that transaction and for the "privalage" of buying the car.

You are paying for all the nice decore and fancy stuff in the showroom along with the heat air conditioning, electric bill and whatever it is costing them to keep all those nice MBs in the showroom and outside lot.

All those suits walking around, looking you over and wondering how much you are worth... you are paying their salaries and from what I understand they do pretty well.

I'm sure some of them make alot more than I do so you know what? I don't deny anyone the right to make a living and I don't mind paying for service and tipping someone that goes above and beyond but buying a car is a negotiation.

It is a competition for YOUR money: How much they take away from you vs. how much you get to keep. Tipping a salesperson is counter productive in my opinion. It would be like tipping the phone company. Gee my phone works so nice I think I'll put a little something extra in the bill this month.

Sorry, maybe I'm cheep or just resent being taken for a sucker. I guess I've had some bad experiences with car dealers and some dealers seem to give all a bad name but I can't condone it.

Think I'm bitter? . Sorry for the rant but I feel better now.
