Question cold start on a 320cdi ?

hi everyone.I had several MB cars in the past but never a diesel. I'm thinking of getting an 08 320cdi next month (replacing a Volvo xc90)but my concern is the cold winter starts at -15C/5F (I live in Canada) .Since the car i'm looking at has the push start button (no delay for glow plugs?) Does it have to be pluged in over night?
And one more question, has anyone compared the 320cdi to a BMW x5 ?
Thank in advance, Happy Holidays!

According to my USA CDI manual, all you have to do is push the start button and release, and the glow plug warm-up and starting procedure is automatic. I would plug in mine if I lived without a garage in those temperatures. Having a garage, I don't notice any difference in starting the CDI compared to a gas vehicle.

It's the 21st century and Mercedes is the world leader in diesel engines--you won't have any problems.

Don't think you will have a problem. I've had my ML diesel for a couple of weeks (don't have the start of and go feature) and one night it was down to -22C, only had to wait 3 secs before starting, and it started immediately.

Minus degrees (C) are more demanding for your car when doing cold start. It doesn't matter if it's diesel or petrol, although diesel fuel has different classifications for winter use. Make sure that you use"winter quality" in cold weather.
One example from Finland:

Also, I would recommend pre-heater for EVERYONE's car used in cold climate.
This saves gasoline and engine, pollutes a lot less and gives you a nice warm car to jump in

I haven't had any issues. Coldest I have seen is -10 F and as I was late for work, didn't wait for anything. Started fine, but seemed to take a half sec longer. Idle came up to about 1100 and I was on my way. It's never been parked in the garage. I run whatever ULSD I can find. In Illinois "they" are supposed to switch over to the winter blend when the temps drop and I use no additives. Hope that helps.
