ML mpg?
i'm thinking of trading in the wife's c240 for an ML. trying to decide between the 350 and the 320CDI. i currenty have a vw TDI and diesel is expensive, but i still do ok w/ the 46mpg average. what mileage are you ML owners getting?

Gotta envy the mileage of your TDI.![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
For my ML, the highest seen on the highway, driving 55MPH or so is 33.7MPG average.
If I step up to 70-75 MPH, same route, it drops to 27MPG average.
In the City, late for a meeting or enjoying the turbo, I can get it down to 22MPG.
If I am stuck in heavy Chicago traffic, (2 hrs and only 30 miles travelled
) I can see 19 MPG
Hope the info helps.
Go Diesel.

Although I like the mileage of your TDI but I still think VW diesels are still unrefined and lot noisy . I hope the new 2009 Jetta diesels are better and comparable to Mercedes diesels.
I have around 3000 miles in my ML320 and the highest I got is 28 on highway driving mostly between 67-72 mph. Careful combination drive yields around 22 mpg.
Too much stop and go will result in poor mileage around 16-17,which makes gas engine a better choice. If you travel mostly highway diesel is a better choice.
I previously owned a R350 and the max mileage I got was 23.5 and the low mileage was 15.Averaging 19.5 in combination driving .
Overall you get around 10-15% better mileage with diesels.

In my ML550 I get 18 - 20 pretty consistently in mixed highway/suburban driving. It drops to 16 - 18 during the wretched New England winter. The new 550 engine seems to be more fuel efficient than the older 500 engine.

On the freeway at 80mph for 250mi trip with the AC blasting, I've averaged 20-22 mpg. Phenomenal efficiency for the power

DIESEL certainly!
I did 61000 km with average 11,9 ltr/100 km.
I do, when driving calm, even 8 ltr/100 km.
When I speed a lot I do 12-13 ltr/100 km
Diesel in Greece, where I live costs 1.25-1.3 Euro per liter.
-------------------------------------------------------
If I compare it with the benzine consumpion and costs:
With the VW Touareg 3.0, similar engine, my last SUV, I think I was a dump to use that car. I hardly did 4 km with 1 liter with that car. The car was burning more fuel even in low speeds! Not to speak about accelerations or speeding in long trips over 150 km/hour! I hardly did about 400 km with 105 litres of benzol!
Today with my ML I do easily from 800-950 km (in proportion with how I drive) with only one tank with 95 litres of diesel! Anyone can do the comments on his own! The diesel engines provide more torque, lot's of power, are more silent inside the cabine (100% proven), you have your horse power in a longer secuence and from very low rpm (in benzine engines you need to burn your engine or your ears in order to have your horse power), you can doubble or nearly tripple your autonomy, and you certainly can save a lot of money for the fuel.
I strongly advice to you to go for a diesel!
If you do not care for the consumption at all, at all, then just take whatever you feel ok! But if the consumption is one of your issues - certainly diesel!
The ML 350 will give you almost same joy in riding but you will pay more then doubble for the fuel for the same kilometres! This is as true as the light of the day!

That's quite nice with the extra power. On a single long highway trip from NJ to DC, I achieved about 22-24 MPG, and I can maybe get 22 MPG on shorter pure highway trips. However, with my mix of a lot of local and some highway, I average about 15-16 MPG.

I just crossed the 3,000K mark and MPG from day of purchase has been 15.4mpg on my ML350. That is city driving with two different drivers behind the wheel.
I was hoping for better when I traded in my LR3 for the ml350. The LR3 averaged 14mpg but it was much heavier, V8 engine, and larger overall.
saving grace is we don't do that much driving.

hey guys with the cdi pl provide feedback if possible. i would like to know the initial gas consumption on startup- say for the first 2 miles.
my wife does very short trips and gets horrible mileage as our gas vehicles never warm up. now i need to tow a race car i'm thinking of getting rid of her jeep in favour of a ml 320 cdi, which i would borrow on occasion.
thanks.

2006 ML350
Hi I have an 06 ML350. I live in the city and most of the time I average about 15mpg (range is 12.5-17 depending on how heavy my foot is that day and if I use the A/C). In the highway it maxes out at like 22.

On a short trip, say under 5 miles, you wont see that much of a difference. It will still be slightly better with the diesel though, maybe by 2-3 MPG. Drive 20 miles, and it gets better, say 6+ MPG. Cruise the highway and you will smile
. If you are going to tow, 400 ft. pounds of diesel torque will always come in handy.![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)

Your mileage is identical to what I get in my GL450. My '06 E500 gets over 27 mpg on the highway and 18-19 around town. From what I see on the 211 forum the mileage for an E550 is about the same.

Ok thanks for the feedback guys. as it turns out a local dealer had a 07 320 cdi so i test drove it. the vehicle was not totally cold even tho i asked - i observed 20-22 mpg before getting to hiway. on hiway it got 25-27 but there was tons of traffic and i couldnt get clear stretches to go over 70 mph.
i saw the 08 ml550 and boy that's a beautiful truck. the amg kit does wonders for it appearance- making it much more masculine. i like.
i went onto http://www.fueleconomy.gov and noted that there was not much diff between the 350 vs the 550 engines. in fact the 550 seems pretty efficient. coupled with discounts available this may be the way to go for me......i would love the power of the ml63 but don't think i could stomach the mpg. btw i don't like the 09s styling.
and no kidding i'm looking for a aprilia rs50.
