Diesel: where/what (Canada)?

Hey all,

So now I drive a Diesel.

Where in Ontario do I get it, and what do I buy? I see that Sunoco has "Gold Diesel", and Shell has a premium product too. Do I buy that? If not, what? How do I find it: do I go to the Esso, Shell, Petrocan and Sunoco websites and copy/paste all their local locations, or is there an iPhone app that helps me find the closest? What is the benefit of "Gold" vs "normal"?

Yes, but:

a) What is the difference between "Gold" and "Regular" diesel?

b) My town has like 100 gas stations. Maybe 20 oif them sell diesel. So how do I know which ones? Drive up to each of them and ask? Or is there a list somewhere? Like one list for all my town's gas stations?

That's the answers I needed. Like - no-one ever told me diesel gas stations have signs, or diesel pumps have yellow handles - how was I to guess? ;-) So - thanks, that's good info.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but isn't this something you would look into before buying your vehicle? If there isn't a station that sells diesel where you live, work, or on the way, this would be an important part in the purchasing decision.

No offense taken!

Of course I know there are plenty of stations. My question is: how do I *find* those stations? So if I drive to Mississauga, which must have 100 gas stations, I am sure that 20 of them sell Diesel. But is there a simple way to get a list? And so on.

You might try gasbuddy.com, I don't know if they cover Canada. Also check with your dealer about the diffrent grades of Diesel. All I'm aware of is that it needs to be ultra low sulfur (15ppm) Watch out for farm diesel! And be careful if you decide to use Bio diesel. Or as they say on the boards (RTFM!)

Yup, that I get, thanks.

In Holland, my aunt (illegally) runs her car on salad oil, which is half the price of gas. Her diesel has no complex converters etc so she can get away with it... ;-)

In the US, we are mandated to use Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel or else our Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) will be destroyed, along with our vehicle warranty. The good thing is that every station I have found sells ULSD. I have no idea how Canada regulates this, so the best advice here is to check with several dealers and see where they fill up the new vehicles. Also check with the gas station suppliers to see if the fuel is less than 15 parts/million of sulfur. here the pump is clearly labeled, and the station is fined thousands per day for violations.

Eventually, when you go for your oil changes, confirm that the dealer only uses Mobil 1 ESP Formula M. If not, this link is a good place to start.

Canada has pretty much the same ULSD requirements. I traveled Sault St Marie to Niagara Falls by way of the Owen Sound Ferry through Tobermory in 2007; and never had the first problem finding ULSD.

I tried to fill up for the first time today. Failed.

a) Only one pump with diesel vs 8 for gas

b) No credit card payment at the diesel pump" that one is full service only

c) A guy at that pump was re-engineering his car; I waited 5 mi nutes, then left

Mmm.
