Winter Tire Questions....Again

Anyone with experiences, your comments are appreciated. As we are heading toward winter and we have our new Bluetec with the OEM runflats, I have heard several people mention that the hard compound gets even worse in winter (cold) months and traction is not so good.

Obviously, I haven't experienced this yet, and part of me doubts that it could be that bad with 4Matic, ESP, etc... Anyway, I am considering purchasing winter tires (in part to save the Bridgestones for warm months instead of having to replace them sooner) and I'm looking to downsize to 18" wheels/tires with Michelin Latitude Alpin HP runflat tires (255/55/18). Anyone ever use these on their ML? Any good or bad tendencies? Ever had to use the runflat aspect of them?

We do hit some deep snow several times during winter, but main concerns are slushy city driving and the inevitable icy conditions.

By the way, is there any issue with going from 19" wheels to 18" of the same width? I don't think so, but how does the offset impact the fit? I'm looking at some 18" x 8" from the 07 GL450. Anyone think there would be an issue?

Thanks!

I would just get a set of 17" snow tires and rims from tirerack.

May be an option, but I have access to as new 18" winter runflats for fraction of new price. Hence my questions about performance, not what we all would consider other viable options. Thanks for your input though.
