Cost of a new windshield..
I have 14,500 miles on my 2011 and I already need a new windshield. (NJ/NY driving plus my tendency to tailgate a bit. Just a bit I swear ) I took it to the dealership for another reason and had them give me a quote for a replacement. They quoted me $1600 which includes labor/parts/tax. Does that seem a bit high to anyone else?

I have a local windshield replacement place I trust as well, so I recently asked them to tell me the replacement cost for OEM glass for my ML I'm getting. It will have the infrared reducing glass and the cost on that windshield for them was $1000. So if this is not the IR glass then that seems very steep to me. Even with IR glass it would not have cost me $1600 at the place I use.
Good tip to know that I can ask about the steps from the dealer though.

I had my X5 windshield replaced and my wife's M3 cab windshield replaced (twice) by Speedy Auto Glass. About half the price the dealer quoted in all three cases, and they use the exact same PPG glass, just without the BMW logo. They buy the correct clips and spacers from the local BMW dealer. Also, they provide same day service as they use a faster drying adhesive than BMW does, so the vehicle doesn't have to be left overnight. I don't know if the good service and quality work apply to all Speedy franchises or whether I just happen to have a good one.

In areas like Calgary, which uses a lot of gravel on the roads in winter, windshield insurance is rarely worth the cost. My insurance company charges about a quarter the cost of a new windshield per year, with $250 deductible. Not worth it as I like to change the windshield every four years or so anyway, as it tends to get quite pitted.

You have a separate glass coverage? In the US it is included in "Comprehensive" or "Other than Collision" which also includes fire, theft and vandalism. It is cheap enough that no owner of a car worth much at all would not carry it.
The OP is in NJ.

It varies in the US as well. It depends very much on the statistical probability of getting a broken windshield. Example -- extremes of temperature, use of sand and road gravel, presence of large numbers of gravel roads, etc. In Dallas, I used to get it included. In Fairbanks, no way -- same issue as Calgary.
