Sunroof Issues

Hi,

90% of the time when I'm closing my sunroof from the full open position while driving/parked the sunroof will close then slide back open again half way. I replaced the motor last week and the switch last year. Any ideas?

Mine has done that since new and been "fixed" four times, to no avail. I now just regard it as a feature as I'm fed up with taking the vehicle in to have it "fixed" again.

Try holding the switch in the closed position for about 4 seconds after it closes?
Might help it to "learn" where it should be.

I think the air deflector is binding and the sunroof thinks there is something caught. You can test this but trying to stop the sunroof with your hand before it closes and see if it does the same thing. I agree with the "relearn" process stated above also. My E did this and my ML does this on occasion, someone said the rails might need to be lubed. Hope you didnt replace the motor because of this issue, if so, bad diags on part of dealer.

There is no doubt that this or something very similar is the problem, but 'teaching' it per dgiturbo's instructions only works for very minor changes in sensitivity. I spoke to a regional Mercedes mechanic who said, off the record, that the sensitivity can be changed by the dealer but for simple ignorance of the procedure most dealers won't perform the fix. Logically it would seem that it should be childishly simple to adjust the sensitivity, but then a lot of things about Mercedes aren't always that logical. I suppose there could also be legal issues: Dealer makes the sunroof less sensitive, six months later little Johnny's neck is damaged when he is standing on the center console with his head out of the roof and he accidentally touches the 'close' control and the closing sunroof fails to retract when it encounters his brainless little head, dealer gets sued for a gazillion dollars, jury awards punitive damages, 100,000 ML owners now have to live with sunroofs that won't close properly, and life goes on in The Suenited States of America.

Alternate possibility: my dealer is clueless.

Last year they "cleaned it" numerous times and replaced the switch once. Last week they changed the motor. I took it in two days ago just before my body shop appointment and the foreman said he wants its again for a few days and says there definitely is a problem. I went to another dealer last year to check with them and they "cleaned and reset it", but tried to charge me for it telling me "sunroof only has a one year warranty", I told them B.S since my other dealer is servicing it for free and its a 2008.

Im booked for first week of June since my ML will be in the bodyshop for a week or two now. My 08 only has 15 000 miles lol.
