Almost impossible to do. I use a household cleaner like 409. Does not seem to hurt the rubber but still does not get them as clean as I like. Actually on my 10 ML550 I did not really want the running boards but had no choice as its the only way it came. Find them not helpful and they seem to get me in my ankles as I step over them to get in the vehicle.

Not certain but I do not think there is a coating.
