Smile Looking at a 2008 ML350...advice?

Hi, I'm looking at an 08 ML350 with about 57,500 miles. Autocheck shows that it was first leased on 5/20/08.

I believe it has the interior appearance package and Premium 1. It has black suede seats, heated front/rear seats, back up camera, navigation, power lift gate, and moon roof.

We drove it and it seemed to be in good shape other than a couple things: Condensation in left headlight, a few door dings, and the power steering was a little loud. It might just be a little low on power steering fluid or maybe I was just scrutinizing the details too closely.

We are looking at an SUV to replace my mom's old Lexus RX. It would get used maybe around 12k miles a year. I prefer the MB looks and drive over a similar 08 RX. We really like the interior of this particular one as well as the nicer rims and bumper (appearance package?). I've been looking 08s because they seem to be more reliable than 06-07 models from what I've read here. I've seen many 06-07 ones for cheaper but have been avoiding them due to reliability concerns. This car unfortunately does NOT have a warranty.

Do you guys have any advise? The asking price is $24,900 and I think I can get it for $23,500-$24,000. Private party, car has no accidents. Good deal?

KBB values with options came out to:
$28,400 excellent
$27,700 very good
$26,900 good

$26,000 (kkb excellent without options)
$25,000 (kkb very good without options)
$24,500 (kkb good without options)

I'd appreciate any comments or advice.

Doesn't sound like a bad deal. I would pay attention to the service history and records. Make sure all recalls were done, and that proper oils and filters were used at the right time for service.
The headlight condensation could be a snag, but that wouldn't be the first or last time I have heard of this. Do inspect the steering noise to make an informed offer.
Otherwise, enjoy the ride...

Not sure if the balance shaft issue on ML350's went into the 08's. Condensation in the light, that car has halogen lights not xenons

Steering noise could be lack of oil. It comes when you pull on lock, and quietens somewhat when back on the straight.
This can result from a minor leak which does not even leave a drip on the garage floor.
Dealer response - "we will fit a new steering rack". They did not even recommend a seal repair kit.
It was under warranty so I agreed.

I would ask owner to obtain the MB maintenance record. MB will only release to the owner and even then, only for the work the original owner had done. If they never took it to MB for service it won't show anything current.

When I purchased my CPO 2008 ML320 CDI from the MB dealer they provided the maintenance record from day one from the original owner who had all the work done at the same dealer.

You'll also want to check to see if the current owner has had any transmission problems. The early build 2008 models (mine is a July 2007 build) were affected with the valve body problem well documented on this and other MB forums.

I would take it to MB for an inspection. It would be well worth the cost and any findings could be used as a negotiating point with the seller. You could then take it to an MB indy shop for the repairs if you decide to purchase.
