06 ML350 Power Steering Failure

This past weekend, the steering wheel went completely stiff and we had to tow the 06' ML350 to a local garage.

The garage is telling us that the power steering pump has to be replaced, along with a flush and labour it'll be about ~$900.

The biggest bill we've had with the 350 was replacing the Transmission Pump for $1500, when the engine light came on; ever since then we've had a light hum/vibration behind the steering wheel.

The first instance that we had a stiff steering wheel was when the car battery died. We since replaced the battery, but ever since that episode we've had some issues with the steering wheel. If we go at speeds higher than 65mph the steering wheel starts to vibrate, and is very noticeable.

We took it into the garage, and they told us it's an issue with the tires; so i paid for wheel alignment, a few weeks later we had the same issue... but the garage did another wheel alignment for free; he said that's the best they can do without replacing the tires. He said there is plenty of life in the tires, and no need to replace them.

We've done about 80,000 miles on the car, is it normal for the power steering to go like this?

If there was a power steering leak (my lines are leaking) and you starved the pump of fluid, then yes. Especially if the pump was noisy before.
